NEC Hydrastor – HS8 Series
NEC Storage HS8-50 is an advanced storage system, using innovative grid storage technology, for archival and backup that enable you to extend capacity without disturbance in addition maintain costs as compare to tape based solution.
- As compare to previous model (HS8-40) It has greater processing power while at the same time environmental friendly, consume low power and a reduced its weight.
- Data compression technology has made storage efficient, and managing operation at low costs equivalent to tape.
- It came up with advanced autonomous management due to which administrative cost and work load related to administration has been reduced.
- High reliability and failure tolerance has been achieved by distributing data over multiple nodes than that of traditional RAID
- Remote replication can be done with reduction in cost
* NEC Storage HS series is sold as HYDRASTOR® in the United States of America.
The three core technologies supporting grid storage
Upgrade capacity and performance freely and non-disruptively: Dynamic Topology
You can add Hybrid nodes or storage nodes to increase the capacity or performance of HS8-50.
In case of additional storage nodes are merged to internal network, automatic detection and incorporation will be done into the storage pool. Stored data is automatically redistributed across the system for data resiliency and load balancing without any interaction required from the operator and is ready at instant. The feature to upgrade capacity and performance results in well-organized operation and management.

Promoting lower costs by dramatically improving storage efficiency: Data compression
Data Redux ( Data Compression technology) intelligently distribute the data into variable length blocks to make advance duplicate data detection to be removed then, enabling for both increased write speeds and storage efficiency.

Distributed Resilient Data (Tolerance to concurrent multiple failures and High reliability surpassing RAID)
Data is divide into multiple blocks and parity data is added, with high-dimensional redundancy surpassing that of traditional storage. Data can still be recovered, even If failures occur in multiple locations, as data blocks are written to different disks across various nodes. Uncertain events like hard drive failures or even more than three node failures occur, no data will be lost.

Key Features
Tamper-proof feature for data security
The WORM ( Write Once Read Many) is one of the core feature that protects data from unauthorized or accidental tampering. You need to set protection on a file periodically and secured file cannot be tampered or deleted even by administrators. After the completion of protection period secured files could be deleted. When WORM protection is no longer needed, you can not only physically delete it completely but also impossible data recovery could be managed.

Synthesizing incremental backups made technology efficient
As the amount of data increases backup operations become longer. NEC Storage HS performs incremental backups, there is no requirement of traditional periodical full backups in it. An initial full backup is performed after that full backups can be synthesized rapidly from incremental backups that leads to shorten the backup times.

Replication packet encryption
Packets are encrypted to enhance security during replication and provide complete resistant for third parties to read protected data. The encryption method used is AES (*2) (256bit is used in that has reputation in storage industry. As per remote system encryption can be enabled or disabled.
*2: Advanced Encryption Standard

Reliability, Scalability and cost performance has surpassed conventional backup devices
Affordable and convenient remote replication for disaster recovery
Replication with regular SAN storage requires a high-speed connection that results high cost. Making data backups to an off-site location as a disaster recovery managed by traditional tape is a much risky with regard to security or it can be lost while being transported.
Data Redux Technology has reduced the size of replication data, replication at low cost and even it can be operated in slower connections.
Recovery Time Objective and Recovery Point objective (RPO) to get the desired data is greatly reduced. It has cut the monthly connection fees, time consumption and risk of data lost even in disaster.

Long-term system operation
NEC Storage HS came up with a grid architecture consisting of a mesh of multiple nodes both old and new model of nodes could be used together. Migration of data will be done automatically during adding a new node. As the migration is completed the old Node can be removed without interruption.
You can have huge savings in comparison to build and test a completely new system.
